Prevention of Cross Contamination in Modern Tattooing
Introduction
Tattooing has exploded in the last few years in many ways including, but not limited to, it's acceptability to the general public, the talent level of the artists, and its visual vocabulary.
In the midst of this rapid expansion the topic of cross contamination (CC) must be taken very seriously. This article is meant for artists who may not be up to speed on preventative measures, called Universal Precautions. It's also meant to be a guide to inform potential tattoo clients on what to look for in a tattoo shop that is following proper CC preventative measures.
This article will discuss the minimum measures or Universal Precautions that all Tattoo Artists should follow.
What is Cross Contamination?
When we touch one object that is contaminated with bacteria, viruses, spores, or other germs our hands have picked up those germs and are now contaminated. Contamination occurs when we transfer those germs to a second object by touching it.
In the field of tattooing there are many infectious organisms that an artist needs to concern him or herself with including Hepatitus, HIV, and MRSA. These are serious diseases and precautions should be taken seriously as well.
Preventative Measures
Basic Universal Precaution measures call for the placement of a barrier between any bodily fluids and objects that are used in a tattooing procedure.
These objects would be things such as power supplies, clip cords, tattoo machines, spray or squeeze bottles, arm rests, chairs or massage tables, and counter tops and surfaces used as a work area.
If an artist needs to answer the phone or touch an object that's not normally utilized during the tattooing process gloves should be removed, disposed of, and replaced with a fresh pair of gloves before tattooing resumes.
After tattooing is completed, all barrier film (plastic coverings) on work areas, tattoo machines, etc. should be carefully removed and disposed of and all surfaces should be wiped with an anti-microbial disinfectant in the manner specified by the product being used.
